Enabling technologies

Basilea's research assets include proprietary knowledge about approximately 400 selected anti-infective targets, and the results of early research projects. Basilea has set up an evaluation process using microbial genomics for selecting the most promising targets.

All targets selected by these methods have been further assessed for their suitability for screening and have been given priority according to
  1. mechanism of action
  2. essentiality in vitro and in vivo and
  3. ease of assay

Basilea performs high-throughput screening of samples originating from its chemical programs, and from fermentation extracts of its collection of approximately 120,000 isolates of antibiotic-producing microbes. In addition our compound library further facilitates the identification of new drug candidates.

Basilea has a collection of proprietary crystal structures of enzyme-inhibitor complexes, which cover our most important current targets. We exploit this proprietary knowledge by internal expertise and a network of collaborations to design novel inhibitors for selected targets. This process helps us to identify the most promising lead candidates.

Optimization of Basilea's lead compounds and selection of clinical candidates are performed at Basilea by focused project teams. The synthesis of key intermediates is optimized as early as possible in order to assure adequate supply of active compounds to research programs.
